On the Chesapeake Bay after World War II, nine concrete Navy ships were sunk to form a breakwater for a ferry landing. After the Bridge-Tunnel was completed in 1964, the ferry was obsolete. Today the calm area inside the breakwater is part of Kipetopeke State Park.
